Members of the general public are welcome to attend Refugee Realities any time between 10am and 6pm from Friday 22nd of February to Thursday 13th March without making a booking. We suggest a gold coin donation to Oxfam Australia on entry to Refugee Realities.

We request that groups of more than fifteen people make a group booking by submitting the following form.

Refugee Realities guided tours are recommended for students in Grade 5 and above. We recommend that younger children are accompanied to Refugee Realities by their parent or guardian rather than in a school group.

The guided tour will take approximately 1.5 – 2 hours. Bookings are available to start at half hour intervals between 9am-12noon and 1pm-3pm every day between 22 February and 13 March. All school and community groups are also encouraged to request a free education kit along with their tour.

What students will DO:

School tour groups will be guided through the event by a trained volunteer guide who may be a former refugee or humanitarian worker. The tour will begin with an educational video about the experiences of a group of young refugees in Australia. The tour will then turn into a simulation refugee experience. Visitors will be asked to step into the shoes of a refugee and explore a range of simulation exercises including being separated from family and friends, exploring a mine field, registering to receive humanitarian assistance in the camp, learning how to survive in a camp by finding food, water, shelter and firewood, and finding home again. Teachers and guides will have opportunities to debrief with the students throughout the experience.

What students will LEARN:

Students will learn about a range of refugee issues including: the causes of refugee displacement (crisis, war and conflict); humanitarian responses to crisis; international law (including the definition of a refugee or internally displaced person, the rights of displaced peoples in crisis situations and responsibilities of governments and the international community to protect those rights); the minimum standards for living in a refugee camp, the challenging and traumatic experiences displaced peoples commonly face, as well as what students and the wider community can do to improve the situation for refugees.
